For three years e-Candle was free, paid for by ads. When we finally asked for money, the question wasn’t which features to charge for. It was which design details make an emotional moment feel worth paying for.

The question we started with
What would make this moment feel worth it?
The job was clear: be there for a birthday you can’t attend. So everything for sale had to add emotion to that moment, not gate it. Sparklers and fountains make the cake feel like a party. Premium cards and your own photo make it personal. Seasonal packs bring the holidays in. Building a cake, blowing it out and sending a free card still cost nothing, and whoever receives one never sees a price.
How it changed
- July 2023e-Candle launches, free.
- 2023 to 2026Banner ads arrive. For three years they are the only income.
- 3 October 2026Version 2 and the first things to buy: premium card designs, sparkler and fountain candles, your own photo on a card, and Remove ads. All one-time.
- 6 to 8 October 2026Seasonal packs: Halloween everywhere, Thanksgiving in the US, Día de Muertos in Mexico. More in story 5.
- 9 October 2026e-Candle Plus: every card, candle and pack, no ads, yearly or once for life.
Asking for money carefully, in practice: the Remove ads offer appears at most three times per install, ever, and never twice in one session. The seasonal reminder never mentions buying. Purchases need no account and restore from the store.

What it left us with
- Charge for the feeling, not the function. Everything for sale makes the moment bigger.
- Keep the core gift free, and keep the person receiving it out of the transaction.
- Ask rarely and carefully. Trust compounds; pressure spends it.
